Understanding Fentanyl Abuse

Understanding Fentanyl Abuse Recovery

Fentanyl is a form of opioid pain medication that is most commonly used to relieve and prevent pain after surgery or other medical procedure. This medication is typically compared to morphine; however, the effects of fentanyl are believed to be more potent, making it effective in reducing severe and/or chronic pain. This substance works by plugging up the receptors in the brain, which are found in areas where the brain can control pain and emotions. As soon as fentanyl attaches to these opioid receptors, dopamine levels rise, which cause the individual to feel euphoric and relaxed.

The effects and addictive properties of fentanyl make this an extremely dangerous drug with a high likelihood of abuse and dependence. As is also the case with other opioids, once an addiction to fentanyl develops, it can be exceptionally challenging to overcome.

Thankfully, there are treatment options available that can help those who are addicted to fentanyl end their destructive habits. Medication assisted treatment is one form of care that can help those who are struggling with an addiction to this medication take steps towards recovery. This type of care includes the use of specific medications that are proven effective in decreasing cravings, preventing serious withdrawal symptoms from developing, and stopping the onset of harmful effects that can develop from the continued abuse of opioids like fentanyl. By consuming these medications under the supervision of qualified professionals, individuals can develop the clarity of mind needed to move forward on their journey towards recovery.

At Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center, our certified and skilled medical and mental health professionals are able to provide and supervise this type of treatment so that women and men who are addicted to fentanyl can reclaim their lives. At Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center, we want to help you rebuild a life that is happy, healthy, and free from fentanyl addiction.

Types of Treatment Offered

Types of Treatment Offered for Fentanyl Abuse at Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center

As a group of outpatient care providers, we at Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center supply medication assisted treatment to adults ages 18 and older who are struggling with fentanyl addiction. These talented and compassionate doctors, nurses, and counselors at Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center are committed to providing personalized treatment plans that are designed to meet the unique needs of the patient. The variety of medication assisted treatment and therapeutic services we supply at Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center include:

Methadone: Extensive research has outlined the safety and effectiveness of using methadone within a certified treatment center and under the supervision of a professional. Methadone interacts with the same receptors in the brain that other opioids like fentanyl do, but without causing the patient to become high. As a result, patients can continue to follow through with everyday tasks without being high, craving fentanyl use, or suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

Suboxone: Suboxone, which was approved for use in medication assisted opioid addiction treatment programs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is a medication that works to decrease cravings and withdrawal symptoms without causing the patient to get high. Suboxone is comprised of buprenorphine, which handles cravings and withdrawal symptoms, as well as naloxone, which prevents abuse and overdose.

Subutex (buprenorphine): Like Suboxone, Subutex contains buprenorphine, but it does not contain naloxone. Therefore, it can minimize cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Many patients start their medication assisted treatment on Subutex, and then transition to Suboxone for long-term care.

Individual therapy: At Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center, we feel that for medication assisted treatment to be the most effective it can be, that therapeutic interventions must also be included into one’s care. While medication works to settle the physical aspects of addiction, individual therapy can help address the psychological components of it. Individual therapy sessions occur on a one-on-one basis with a counselor, and serve as a time for patients to sort through the issues that have either led to the development of the addiction, or occurred in response to it.

Group therapy: In addition to the individual therapy sessions that patients participate in, group therapy sessions also provide benefit. At Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center, group therapy sessions happen within a supervised, therapeutic environment. By engaging in these sessions, those who are addicted to fentanyl or other substances can make progress in their recovery by providing and receiving personal insights, encouragement, and support to and from their peers. All group therapy sessions are led by counselors who are able to offer informative, empathetic, and structured sessions so all patients feel safe and productive.

Why Consider Treatment

Why Consider Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center for Fentanyl Abuse

Fentanyl abuse can leave individuals likely to experience a number of detrimental consequences. From a physical standpoint, those who abuse this substance can suffer from immune system depression, gastrointestinal problems, and feelings of sedation that can impact how they function on a day-to-day basis. Fentanyl abuse can also lead to a lack of motivation, which can result in the individual’s inability to fulfill obligations at work or home, which can lead to financial strife, familial discord, unemployment, and social isolation. Serious changes in mood are also common among fentanyl users, and increased levels of paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions can also develop. Thankfully, by obtaining the proper treatment, these types of dangers can be overcome or prevented.

While defeating an addiction to fentanyl can seem impossible, there are ways to recover. At Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center, our talented and devoted team of professionals is able to help you make the choices needed to get your life back on track and put fentanyl addiction in your past once and for all.
